Is this wrong, or not?

Last August, I met a really great guy. He was a friend of a friend, and it was a blatant setup on my friend's part. After we were done hanging out, we texted and talked on the phone all the time, every day. The real kicker is that he lives 9 hours away. I didn't know this until the day after I met him, but I really liked him, and I figured maybe a friendship could happen. Well, we kept talking and realized we had a lot in common. He even talked about places he would go when he came home for holidays and also hinted that a long distance relationship could happen, which was great. It was also sort of an unmentioned rule that we were obviously allowed to see other people. I did that for the rest of the summer, but always kept him in my mind. I never discussed the guys with him though. Recently, he decided to ask my advice on his ex-girlfriend, who wants him back. I don't mind that he's getting back with her, I'm just confused on whether or not that was appropriate to ask my advice on it or not. Please help :(
