Is Animal Crossing for Gamecube a good buy?

I am thinking about getting animal crossing for myself. I just want to know the basics of the game and if you think I should buy it. Is it fun, what is the goal, what do your characters do, Is it possible for me to visit other player's villages, do I get to design the vilage, villagers, and clothing, and what are some of the things that you can do in the game?
