I had breakthrough bleeding and my menstrual blood is different, is this a sign of miscarriage?

I called my doctors office after experiencing breakthrough bleeding, they said to stop the birth control for a week to have a period, then return to normal routine. But the menstrual blood is different than normal. I've heard about this, and it sounds like a possible birth control failure, and miscarriage. Help?
